Letting Go in the New Year

pexels-photo-112324While the New Year brings new things, it’s also a time to release old things or things that no longer serve you. Perhaps you’ll want to declutter the home, start a new job, or start a new semester in school. 

My new year thus far has been trying to release negative emotions that I’ve been carrying around for a while. I have this real fear of being abandoned. Throughout my life, I’ve had to move around and leave people behind and then during high school when people are already very cruel, my friends would pick me and drop me whenever they saw fit. I never knew why. I need to let go of attachments. Not that I don’t need to form bonds with people and be sad when they’re further away, but I need to know that it’s okay. It’s okay for people to fall out of friendship because of distance, it’s okay if people don’t like you. You’ll find the right people.

As I was doing this, more and more, the people I really care about, have been responding much more. More invites to things, more considerations. I’m no longer wasting my time on holding onto the past and wondering what I could have done better. Because of this, I’m opening my energy and my heart to the people who actually want my love and friendship instead of sending it to people who treat me like trash. And what’s even more interesting, an old friend recently contacted me that had cut me out of his life. He told me that it wasn’t my fault, but something he was going through.

Now I’m not saying that you’re going to automatically get back into contact with long-lost loved ones, or that things are going to magically get better. What I’m saying is that it’s not worth it to keep holding onto old feelings, friendship or otherwise. Let go of the things, emotions, and the people that don’t serve you, who don’t make you better or who don’t make you feel nice.

This may have been a little rambly, but I know that if you let things go, better things will come your way. Maybe not immediately, but it will come. Just give it some time.
